** Zum Andenken im Gebete an Herr Horst Bedrow **

Hallo Zusammen ,

In stillem Gedenken,

Ibrahim Ahmad

In Remembrance – Arthur William Baudzus , 25 Jan 1922 – 6 August 2015

with Arthur Baudzus in 2010 - Towrang , NSW , Australia
At 93 years and seven months he had a long life.

Arthur Baudzus served in the E-Motor room of  uboat , U-859 holding the rank of Maschinengefreiter .

Born in the East Prussian town of Lyck. He was ten when Hitler came to power and only 23 when the Nazi regime collapsed.  He grew up alongside the developing right wing movement, but managed not to get involved. When World War II began he was 18, and a member of the generation that was almost totally wiped out in the following five years of carnage.

As a young man, after an apprenticeship as an electrician, he went to work in a shipyard involved in building, and then repairing, U-boats. Ultimately, despite the draft exempt status conferred by his job, he enlisted in the Navy and volunteered for U-boats.

Assigned to U-859 as a last-minute replacement, Baudzus departed Kiel with the Type IXD/2 long-range U-boat in April 1944, bound for Penang in Japanese occupied Malaya. The voyage took six months, during which U-859 managed to evade British and American pursuit, while sinking 3 ships.

Then, less than an hour from entering port in Penang, a torpedo from the British submarine HMS Trenchant brought an abrupt end to the voyage. When U-859 was sunk September 23, 1944 near Penang in the Straits of Malacca, (Location: 05.49.254N , 100.02.466E) by torpedoes from the British submarine HMS TRENCHANT he was one of the few survivors that escaped from the boat after it had sunk to the bottom at a depth of around 164 feet.

Baudzus, and 19 others, were trapped in the sunken U-boat, had to swim up to the surface. Baudzus did so without the aid of escape gear. Some were rescued by the submarine that sank them, but Baudzus and others spent the next 24 hours floating in the Malacca Straits before being picked up by a Japanese patrol boat.

He returned to Germany from an Allied prisoner of war camp in 1946.With East Prussia lost to Poland, and "having tasted the tropical velvet air of Southeast Asia," he was soon back in Indonesia, working as a marketing manager for Siemens. When political conditions in Indonesia deteriorated in 1958, he decided to look for greener pastures. Anglicizing his first name, Artur, to Arthur, he settled in Australia, where he continued to work as a marketing manager for Siemens until his retirement. "Now," he writes, "after eight decades of activity, I find myself with time on my hands to wallow in memories, so I got myself a keyboard and started typing."

He also wrote 3 books about his WWII experiences

  1. The Hunter and the Hunted – Fiction (1967)
  2. U859 - Fiction (2003)
  3. Coming of Age in Hitler's Germany and the Voyage of the U859 -  Non Fiction (2006)
